Within the framework of the project the cereal grains winter barley, oats, corn, winter rye, winter triticale, and winter wheat were investigated.

For this purpose, 134 genotypes of the cereal grains (21x winter barley, 14x oats, 27x corn, 22x winter rye, 21x winter triticale, and 29x winter wheat) have been selected in collaboration with plant breeders. The cereal grains winter barley, oats, winter rye, winter triticale, and winter wheat were cultivated by the State Plant Breeding Institute on trial areas of the Agricultural Experiment Station of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in the immediate vicinity of the University of Hohenheim. Eight corn genotypes were cultivated in the area of Obere Rheinebene near Eckartsweier; all further corn genotypes were provided by seed breeding companies. The variation between genotypes is to be ascribed to breeding differences due to the fact that location, cultivation, processing, harvest, and storage were equal for all cereal grains.

All cereal grains fed in the animal experiments of the different subprojects are taken from the grain lots mentioned above.
